I am a consultant in emergency medicine working at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham which is the UK’s busiest emergency department. My experience lies in the management of all medical and trauma emergencies involving both adults and children. Major incidence management is also a part of my portfolio.

My role in Balakot, in October 2005, was organising the emergency department. This involved the initial management, ressuscitation and triage for definitive care of all injured casualties. My expertise with children made me an important resource for all voluntary teams working in the area.

My best moment in Balakot was diagnosing a puncture in the lung from a Patients X ray of her shoulder. I had not seen the patient but came to find out that she was breathless. We called for her immidiately and a chest Xray confirmed our suspicions. We then had to fashion a drainage kit out of meagre resources. My diagnosis helped saved the lady’s life, and when we arrived back in the United Kingdom, I received a text to say the chest drain had been removed and the lady was fully healed.

Dr Zahid Sheikh
MD FFARCSI MSc,
MDAUK Secretary
Consultant Anaesthetist
Derby Royal Infirmary
Derby DE1 2 QY
07881902921

I am a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Derby Hospitals (UK) (USA Attending anesthiologist equivalent). My special interest is Regional anaesthesia, which allows surgery to take place without the General anaesthetic. I qualified in 1985 from Ukraine (former USSR) and have trained in Pakistan, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

My skill in regional anaesthesia was used to the maximum during my work in the field hospital in the earthquake effected region of Balakot, where I Managed to anaesthetise patients without using general anaesthesia. On the first day of arrival to Balakot we did not have all the required medical equipment to hand therefore I was forced to work without oxygen. Fortunately due to my skills in regional anaesthesia I circumvented the problem and was able to anaesthetise patients without the need for oxygen. Another important asset was is my experience in paediatric anaesthesia, using this skill set I was able to ensure that all operations undertaken on all children during the earthquake rescue mission were pain free.

I am also involved in the acute pain services following surgery and the teaching and training of the junior doctors and the medical staff, this teaching experience will be vital to the MDAUK to ensure a pain-free service with an excellent level of anaesthesia care.

I will be providing my expertise in General and Regional anaesthesia for all types of elective and acute surgery within the MDAUK project. I will aim to set up a succinct and protocol driven acute pain service for the patients following surgery, this concept is virtually non-existent in Pakistan. My experience in Surgical Intensive care will be an asset to the MDAUK project.

Mr Mohammed Ali Yaqoob
Knee fellow/Orthopaedic surgeon : Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham

Qualifications:
MBBCh(Wales):1992. FRCS(Eng):1998. FRCS(Tr & Orth):2004

About Myself
I was born in Ghourghusti, Pakistan and was brought up in Cardiff, UK. I qualified from Cardiff Medical school and then trained as a Surgeon. I have specialised in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery and my sub speciality interest is Sports injuries and knee surgery.

I am a member of The British Orthopaedic Association(BOA),  British Association of Surgery of the Knee(BASK) and British Trauma Society(BTS). I have lectured and presented at National and International meetings. I have been a medical student examiner at Birmingham University and I organised the First FRCS(Orth) revision course in Birmingham. Currently I am undergoing a BASK approved Knee Fellowship at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham.

The Pakistan earthquake was a significant historical event with the loss of many thousands and the injuring and disability of many more. I had never encountered injuries on such a scale . Our experience in Balakot was unique and fulfilling and I felt greatly honoured to have been able to participate, sadly we could not stay on further to help.

Our intention as MDA-UK is to establish a permanent hospital  to provide service and quality comparable to UK hospitals. My personal interest would be to provide Orthopaedic services and also to provide for training and education of local clinicians in Orthopaedic practice. As I learnt in Balakot  the delivery of effective clinical care can only occur if there is a variety of specialists who can provide comprehensive clinical skills. Our aim is to recruit non-medical and medical volunteers to deliver such care.
